About Us

We are a family run tearooms who are passionate about homemade, local, Welsh food & produce.

Rachel, who was born in Hay On Wye, originally trained & qualified as a hair stylist. Before this she had worked in the tearooms when it was owned by her Aunt Betty and she always wanted the chance to run her own tearooms.

Mike had already been a local head chef, with a good name for quality food, but had started his own relief chef business (Chef On The Run Foods), so when the chance came for us to buy and re-open the tearooms in 2006 we jumped at it.

Since re-opening The Old Stables Tearooms we have won many awards for our quality homemade Welsh food, drinks & customer service.

Rachel & daughter, Katie, are now in charge of running & cooking at the tearooms. Mike injured his leg in a charity parachute jump and an extended period of treatment means that he’s had to take a back seat.

Our menu emphasizes local and homemade and many of our customers return for their favourites. Favourites such as Rachel’s homemade Welsh Steak & Ale Pie using local beef, Welsh leeks & Welsh ale; also her Welsh Rarebit made to our own secret tearooms’ recipe; and don’t forget Katie’s Grilled Salmon Fillet with a whisky cream sauce.

All of our dishes are made by us at the Tearooms, and feature as much local home-grown produce as possible. If it wasn’t grown by Rachel’s dad Jimmy it came from another local supplier. We only use free range eggs.

We make all of our own cakes, puddings & desserts. Rachel’s signature pud is her Welsh Whimberry & Apple Pie using whimberries picked on the hills above Hay and our own apples. Not to be outdone by Mum, Katie has her own signature dessert as well; her Old Stables Spiced Apple Cake again using our own apples & eggs.

We are also a fully licensed tearooms selling Welsh ales, lager & cider as well as red & white wine.
We serve over 30 types of teas & infusions, our house tea is Welsh Brew Tea. Even our coffee beans are roasted in Wales.

We also make our own range of jams and preserves using as much local fruit as possible. They have also won many awards and as well as using them ourselves they are on sale in the Tearooms, local shops, B&Bs and online at Passion Preserves.

We use our own double award winning strawberry & rose jam with our homemade scones (made daily by Katie) & our famous Giant Welsh Teacakes (from the local baker). Our clotted cream is locally produced across the border in Herefordshire.

2016 is our 10th year at The Old Stables and winning the Best Tea/Coffee Shop at the Regional Awards Wales in April 2016 makes it all the hard work worthwhile. Especially as we were nominated and voted for by you, our wonderful customers, before being judged again by a panel of experts.
